On 17th December, 1914 the 1st Bedfordshire battalion of 15 Brigade, 5th Division moved into trenches north-west of Wulverghem in Belgium where they remained until relieved on 24th December. On 20th December, the day on which Edward Windsor was killed, the enemy shelled the battalion’s trenches in retaliation for their own trenches being shelled and about 12 yards of the front trench was blown in. There was also sniper activity that resulted in casualties. |
